10 Ways to Prevent Falls at Home for Seniors

Falls are the leading cause of injury among adults 65 and older, and most of them happen at home. The good news: most falls are preventable. Whether your loved one lives in Houston, Katy, or anywhere in between, these ten steps can make their home significantly safer.

1. Remove Throw Rugs

Throw rugs are one of the most common tripping hazards in the home. Remove them entirely, or secure them with double-sided tape and non-slip backing.

2. Improve Lighting

Aging eyes need more light. Install bright bulbs, add nightlights in hallways and bathrooms, and ensure light switches are easy to reach from bed.

3. Install Grab Bars

Install grab bars in the bathroom — next to the toilet and inside and outside the shower. Towel racks are not grab bars; they won't support a person's weight.

4. Clear Walkways

Keep hallways and stairways free of clutter, electrical cords, and furniture. A clear path is a safe path. Our light housekeeping caregivers routinely clear tripping hazards as part of their visits.

5. Use Non-Slip Mats

Place non-slip mats inside and outside the bathtub or shower. A wet bathroom floor is a major fall risk.

6. Wear Proper Footwear

Encourage your loved one to wear supportive, non-slip shoes or slippers indoors — even at home. Walking in socks or flimsy slippers is risky.

7. Review Medications

Some medications cause dizziness, drowsiness, or low blood pressure — all of which increase fall risk. Have a doctor or pharmacist review all medications for side effects and interactions. Our medication management services help track this.

8. Stay Active

Regular, gentle exercise improves balance, strength, and flexibility — the three best defenses against falls. Walking, Tai Chi, and simple strength exercises all help.

9. Arrange Furniture for Support

Position sturdy furniture along walking paths so your loved one can steady themselves if needed. Avoid glass-topped or unstable pieces.

10. Consider a Caregiver for High-Risk Times

Most falls happen during trips to the bathroom at night or when rushing to answer the door. A caregiver — even for a few hours, or overnight through 24/7 live-in care — can provide the supervision that prevents these high-risk moments.

When to Get Help

If your loved one has already fallen, has balance issues, or feels unsteady, don't wait for another fall. A professional care assessment can identify risks you might miss.
